Discover
Auckland Castle sits at the heart of 150 acres of historic parkland, established over 800 years ago by the Prince Bishops of Durham as their own private deer park.
Over the centuries many Prince Bishops changed the aspect of the park, but Richard Trevor, Bishop of Durham from 1752 to 1771, had the greatest impact. He remodelled the park as a landscape setting to the palace and built the Georgian gothic Deer House and the Trevor Bridge.
Today the Deer Park is a haven for wildlife and is free for everyone to visit at any time of the year. Download our Walk in the Park map, lace up your walking boots and get ready to explore the winding woodland paths. There are three suggested walks through the Deer Park and points of interest to look out for along the way, including many of the park’s original medieval features such as fish ponds and woodland paths.
Please take care when exploring the Deer Park by walking on the designated paths and keeping dogs on leads.
