Auckland Castle – Home of The Prince Bishops of Durham

A multi-million pound conservation programme is taking place at 900-year-old Auckland Castle, County Durham, to help create an arts, faith and heritage destination of international significance.

Find out more about England’s only Prince Bishops and their historic home, Auckland Castle, which served as a private palace for more than 900 years.

In this special video, Volunteer Tour Leader, Lydia Nicholson explains the significance of Auckland Castle and the immense powers of its former residents.

Auckland Castle, Bishop Auckland is currently undergoing a multi-million pound conservation programme, supported by National Lottery players via the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), as well as various other partners.

It will reopen to the public on Saturday, 1 December 2018, bringing the stories of the Prince Bishops of Durham to life.
