Be the first inside new County Durham landmark

10 July 2018

Friends and neighbours across Bishop Auckland and Shildon are invited to be first through the doors of Auckland Tower at a special town event.

On Saturday, 21 July we will be welcoming local residents and businesses inside Auckland Tower as part of a special Town Update event.

There, you can chat to staff and volunteers from The Auckland Project to find out more about the local history that inspired Auckland Tower’s unique design, the progress of the building work and how the building will be used in the future.

The event, running from 10am to 3pm, will also feature a pop-up museum offering all ages the opportunity to get hands on with history to learn more about the powerful Prince Bishops of Durham.

As part of the day’s events, 900-year-old Auckland Castle, the former home of the Bishops, will be open exclusively for drop-in  Behind the Scenes Tours, from 10am -3pm and  Past and Future Tours of Bishop Auckland Market Place will be offered at 11am.

Inside the nearby Mining Art Gallery, you can find out more about the temporary exhibition, The Bevin Boys – War’s Forgotten Workforce, in special talks taking place at 11.30am and 2.30pm, . And tours of the scenic Deer Park will set off from the Clock Tower, Bishop Auckland Market Place at 11am and 2pm.

Auckland Tower Town Update is the first in a series of local events to mark the launch of Auckland Tower. It will be followed by a community event on Saturday, 29 September 2018 and the official launch of Auckland Tower  on Saturday, 20 October 2018. We will be announcing more details about both events soon.
